Kelbi Lewis Mrs. Lehman English 1-1A 19 September 2018 Summary of “Once Upon A Time” Nadine Gordimer wrote a short story called “Once Upon A Time,” about warning people of shutting people out. The narrator tells herself this story after she wakes up in the night and is afraid, only for a moment, that someone broke into her house. The story she tells is about a mom, dad, and a boy living in a segregated, upper class suburb. Over time the suburb begins to get robbed, so the family puts up cameras. They continue to increase security, even building a seven foot wall topped with razor wire. The bot ends up playing a game and crawling into the wire. In the end, the boy gets cut up and hurt really badly by the very thing intended to keep him safe.

Kelbi Lewis Mrs. Lehman English 1-1A 21 September 2018 Summary of “Rituals Of Memory” In her essay “ Rituals Of Memory,” Kimberly M. Blaeser argues that our relationships to family and community shapes who we are. Blaeser gives readers a metaphor comparing those relationships to her friend’s curly hair. She supports her claim with her experiences honoring veterans with the legionnaires. Blaeser also talks about her two cultures. Her experiences as a German Catholic and her Native American education, both shaped her. Blaeser concludes that the stories and memories of our culture makes us who we are.
Summary Reflection
List one thing you've learned from writing this paper that you can apply to other writing assignments. What will that look like? I learned how to write summaries the right way. I learned that summaries are short and sum up the main points of the story. I also learned that I should keep on top of things.
Identify a specific revision you were asked to make and explain why (this can be at any stage of the writing process). How did you revise? What did you learn? When I wrote my "Night Calls" summary, I didn't get it finished the first time, so I finished it when I had free time. I had to sort through the story and decide what was important to add and what needed to be left out. I learned that I need to complete assignments when they are due and ask for help when I need it or don't understand something.
What are the conventions of a summary and how did you meet those in this assignment? A summary introduces the title of the story and the author. Then, it tells a brief description of what the story is about. I was able to include the title and author in the first sentence of my summary and then I wrote three or four additional sentences describing what the story was about.
Given more time to work on this assignment, how would you improve it? I would improve this assignment by giving more details. I would add a little bit more description to what went on in the story.
What is one thing you're proud of in this paper? I was proud that end I was able to finish this assignment and get an A.
